Daniel Howell on the revival of folk crafts and traditional skills | Muzzle Blasts Podcast

Daniel is a young father in the Western United States.

Daniel is a young father in the Western United States.

We're talking with Daniel Howell this week. Daniel has been involved in rendezvous out west for many years now, but in adult life has transitioned into studying and living by "primitive skills". A woodworker by trade, Daniel has continued to travel back in time, so to speak, re-learning what our forefathers and mothers lived by.

Daniel is from the western US, so we get into some of the history and differences between what he studies, versus what someone like me from east of the Mississippi river studies. We talk about the skills and craft behind muzzleloading, as well as its history in the United States and how muzzleloaders went hand in hand with skills like foraging, woodworking, blacksmithing and more.

Mike Beliveau on Writing, Youtube, and the Duelist’s Den | Muzzle Blasts Podcast

Today we’re talking with Mike Beliveau about his personal history with muzzleloading, his work as a writer as well as a bit about his youtube channel, Duelist 1954.

Don't let the Shooting get in the way of the fun | A conversation with Author and Historian Tom Schiffer

This week's podcast is a little different, we are sitting down with Author and Historian Thomas Schiffer about "The History of the NMLRA" and early 1900s Muzzleloading.

Tom has always been a family friend at the range, but I never knew about how much he cared about history. History of the United States, World War 2, and the NMLRA. In 2017 he began writing "The History of the NMLRA", a comprehensive history on the origins of the NMLRA. You'd imagine this book is full of board minutes and photos of men in suits shooting chunk guns, but Tom quickly found out that history isn't so much about the paperwork as it is about the personalities involved.

Tune in to this episode to hear more, I'm not going to spoil it for you.

This month was a little slow on releases with the Christmas rush, but we've got an action-packed January planned. We'll be talking to Mark Humphries of the "Black Powder Maniac Shooter" Youtube Channel at his Annual New Year's Day Shoot. We'll also be heading out to the SHOT Show in late January to bring you Muzzleloading focused coverage of the event.

A special thanks this week to the guys at Primitive Pursuit for sponsoring the podcast! Primitive Pursuit was founded in 2017 to be an outlet for learning experiences as a traditional bowhunter.  The truth is, someday’s it will throw you to the wolves.  However, when the gap is closed and you’re finally able to take your shot, it’s all worth it.  Everything comes  together.  Though we’re relatively new to the game, we feel it is our  duty to help those that may go through similar successes and failures.   We truly believe traditional bowhunter’s are among the best hunters in the world.

The Romance of the Smoke -Longhunter Record Breaking Pronghorn with Eric Stanosheck

In this episode, Eric recounts this record-breaking pronghorn hunt, but also his history with modern high power rifles and his eventual conversion to hunting exclusively with muzzleloaders.

For Eric there is something special about the one-shot challenge of muzzleloader hunting, he calls it “The Romance of the Smoke”.  This love of hunting and muzzleloaders runs in his family, three of his four kids and his wife hunt with muzzleloaders.

We're excited to announce a new episode of the Muzzle Blasts Podcast this week. For this episode, we're talking to big-game hunter and Longhunter Society Record holder Eric Stanoschek about his record-breaking pronghorn trophy. In this episode, Eric recounts this record-breaking pronghorn hunt, but also his history with modern high power rifles and his eventual conversion to hunting exclusively with muzzleloaders.

Having hunted with muzzleloaders since the early 2000s, Eric has gone on 66 big game hunts and has 42 animals recorded in the Longhunter Society program.

For him, hunting and using Muzzleloaders is about the relationship with the gun. Unlike modern firearms, muzzleloaders can be a little tricky, and that’s what Eric likes. He says, “For me, hunting with a muzzleloader is about how close I can get and how much time do I get to spend with the animal.”
