The Heart of the South: Shooting the Alabama Territorial
The Alabama Territorial is more than just a competition; it is a pilgrimage to the historic Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park. Nestled among the remnants of the Civil War-era iron furnaces, the range offers a backdrop that is as visually stunning as it is historically significant. For decades, shooters from across the Southeast have gathered here under the towering pines to test their skill with black powder and lead.
The atmosphere in Alabama is defined by a unique blend of Southern hospitality and serious marksmanship. While the firing line remains a place of quiet focus, the surrounding encampments are alive with the sounds of storytelling and the smell of woodsmoke. It is a place where a newcomer can walk up to a seasoned National Champion and receive a masterclass in flintlock maintenance or patch lubrication over a cup of coffee. This spirit of mentorship is the lifeblood of the Alabama community.
The match schedule is designed to challenge every discipline, from the steady hand required for the pistol aggregates to the patience needed for the heavy bench rifles. Whether you are competing in the Offhand matches or testing a traditional trade gun, the Brierfield range provides a fair and professional environment that honors the traditions of the NMLRA. The natural light filtering through the Alabama canopy provides a unique challenge for those used to open-field shooting, making a respectable score here a true badge of honor.
Ultimately, we shoot in Alabama because it feels like home. Between the competitive rounds, you’ll find families sharing meals and friends engaging in the good-natured ribbing that makes the Territorial program so special. We invite you to join us this May to experience the history, the heritage, and the unmatched camaraderie of the Alabama Territorial.
