Message to our advertisers: Below you will find information on a scam that is happening on Internet auction sites. The NMLRA has been informed that the same scam has been tried on some of our advertisers. This notice was picked up at a Post Office by the Editor of Muzzle Blasts. Please read and BE AWARE!

Are you being scammed? If you are selling items on Internet auction sites, you may be at Risk! If you received a check for More than your item sold for (usually a significant amount more) you may be the victim of a scam. These checks LOOK legitimate, but they may be counterfeit. These checks are usually drawn on a major U.S. bank. Here's how the scam works: for example, you sell an item over the internet for $1,000. You receive a check for payment of $6000. Soon you will receive an email with an excuse (perhaps shipping costs) for why the amount is so large, and asking you to wire the difference back to a U.S. or foreign bank. If you wire the difference before the payment check COMPLETELY clears, the scammer has successfully robbed you of the funds. Notice: Even though funds may show in your Available Account Balance, those funds may not have cleared. IF A CHECK DOES NOT CLEAR FOR ANY REASON, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THOSE FUNDS. Help us stop this crime! If you suspect that you are being scammed, please take the check to your local bank branch. The bank will investigate the check and let you know how to proceed.
